What Is the Difference Between Gel and Acrylic Nail Extensions?

What Is the Difference Between Gel and Acrylic Nail Extensions?

Short answer

Gel and acrylic are different products. Gel is a flexible resin cured under an LED lamp; acrylic is a powder mixed with a liquid monomer that hardens in air. Gel feels lighter, has no smell and soaks off with little filing. Acrylic is harder, cheaper and better for extreme length, but needs heavy filing to remove - which is where most natural-nail damage happens.

People use the two words as if they were interchangeable. They are not: the chemistry is different, the application is different, and most importantly for your nails, the removal is different. Here is what actually separates them.

How each one is made

How long it lasts3-4 weeks3-5 weeks

Are gel extensions the same as acrylic?

No. Once they are shaped and painted, a good set of either looks identical in a photograph - which is why the confusion persists. The difference shows up three weeks later, at the refill or the removal, and that is when it matters.

Which one should you get?

  • Choose gel if it is your first set, you type for a living, you dislike strong smells, or you want the gentlest removal.
  • Choose acrylic if you want dramatic length, a stiletto or coffin shape, or your hands take genuine punishment.
  • In Delhi humidity, gel holds its edge seal better - acrylic tends to lift at the sides sooner.
  • Whatever you pick, the prep matters more than the product. Bad cuticle work ruins both equally.

What about price?

Acrylic materials cost less, so acrylic is usually cheaper on the menu. Count removal and any repair into the total and the gap narrows considerably. Gel extensions at our Ramesh Nagar studio start at Rs 500 with complimentary nail art.

Still unsure? Come in and we will look at your natural nail condition first - the honest answer is sometimes neither, not yet. Shapes, sets and refill pricing are on the nail extensions page, and how long each type lasts is covered separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gel and acrylic nail extensions?

Gel is a flexible resin cured under an LED lamp; acrylic is a powder and liquid monomer that hardens in air. Gel is lighter, odourless and soaks off easily. Acrylic is harder and cheaper but needs heavy filing to remove.

Are gel extensions the same as acrylic?

No - they are different products with different chemistry, application and removal. They can look identical once painted, which is why the terms get mixed up.

Which is safer for your natural nails, gel or acrylic?

Gel, mainly because removal needs far less filing. Acrylic removal thins the nail plate when it is rushed. Either is safe when a professional removes it properly.

Which lasts longer, gel or acrylic extensions?

Acrylic, slightly - 3 to 5 weeks against 3 to 4 for gel. In humid weather that advantage disappears because acrylic lifts at the edges sooner.

Is gel or acrylic cheaper in Delhi?

Acrylic is usually cheaper on the price list because the materials cost less. Gel extensions at Blushes & Brushes in Ramesh Nagar start at Rs 500 with complimentary nail art.
